Program: Sea Turtle Hospital Team

Volunteer Team Members work closely with fellow and other team members. Volunteer Team Members report to the Team Leader. Volunteer Team Members will be responsible for the care and husbandry of sick and injured sea turtles. Volunteer Team Members will serve as ambassadors for sea turtles during guided tours and within the community.

Please sign up to help staff KBSTRRC's booth at Autumn with Topsail 
You'll be talking with the public and selling merchandise to raise money for the turtles. In doing so, you'll raise awareness of our organization and of sea turtle conservation.

We will need people to help set the booth up on Friday, Oct. 17th and then volunteers to help out Saturday, Oct. 18th and Sun. Oct. 19th.  The final shift on Sunday will help with breakdown of the booth.

Positions Summary: Provide ongoing care for injured sea turtles.

Responsibilities:
Medical Team Lead
Trained and reports to the Executive Director.
Assist the Executive Director and the Veterinarian in all aspects of medical care.
Review and implement orders from the Veterinarian and Executive Director.
Lead and manage the Medical Team Members.
Provide consistent care for critical turtles.
Reconstitute medication.
Draw up medication.
Administer medication - SQ, IM.
Provide wound care and advanced wound care.
Assist with radiographs.
Assist with running blood diagnostics.
Maintain records.
Be available 24 hours on days scheduled.
Available to fill in other days as needed.
Uphold the center’s mission statement.
Communicate with Team Leaders and Team Members.

Targeted feeds as directed by medical team lead.
Baths/betadine of critical turtles as directed by Medical Team Lead.

Routinely uses and must be able to operate equipment such as scales for weighing of food, sharp knives for cutting food, washer and dryer, telephone, water pumps, remotes for outlets, and any other equipment as necessary.
Requires ability to lift tanks, carry and hold turtles, bending and standing for long periods of time.
Must be able to read food chart and scale.
Ability to lift a minimum of 20 pounds.
Will be exposed to strong odors including cleaning products, seafood, and animal waste.

Responsibilities:

  Make salt water and utilize the pump system to distribute the water mixture to where it is needed in the facility.  Check and maintain salinity and temperature of the salt water. Maintain the filtering system as needed, and setup, operate, and remove temporary pumping systems.   Must develop a conceptual understanding of plumbing lines and able to operate plumbing valves.   Plumbing system requires depressurization for cleaning and maintenance activities.   Must be able to de-energize electrical equipment when needed.  Able to remove and replace aquarium filters and filter lids.   Able to use the garden hose or pressure washer to remove waste and debris.
